Naples. After 5 years, the doors of the monumental Palazzo Fondi are definitively closed, a place that for 60 months has represented a point of reference for the cultural panorama of the city of Napoli.
The historic site of Via Medina which was at the centre of the temporary urban regeneration project developed and implemented by Urban Value together with the State Property Agency and the Municipality of Naples, inaugurated in 2018, has been transformed from an abandoned building into a lively stage for events, film productions, exhibitions and cultural initiatives, capturing the interest of citizens, tourists and operators in the sector, reaching over 2 million visitors.
A pilot project that turned into a success story (it was awarded among the best locations in Italy at the Best Location Awards 2020) and an example ready to be replicated given the exceptional responses received from the public, institutions and companies.
The Palazzo Fondi project represents a virtuous example of collaboration between the public and private sectors, companies, non-profit associations and cultural operators. A temporary redevelopment project in which temporariness was synonymous with opportunity and productivity.
Where sharing and synergy have given life to a virtuous economic system in which each project created has generated an induced effect that has been partly reinvested in the structure itself. The whole city has benefited from it, with the activities that took place at Palazzo Fondi generating an induced effect of over €6.000.000.
Palazzo Fondi has been a true project incubator, a place of exchange and hybridization where over 500 events have been held, more than 340 entities have been hosted and it has been the “home” of 30 permanent businesses including the Barrio Botanico, one of the most iconic cocktail bars in the city.

“We close this unique experience even more aware of the need to create places that have the goal of welcoming, enhancing and encouraging the exchange of ideas and energy of a community. The experience of Palazzo Fondi has shown that it is possible to transform abandoned places into vibrant cultural spaces.
This closure opens the doors to new horizons, new projects, new opportunities and new challenges. Thanks to the far-sighted and enlightened work of the Agenzia del Demanio and the great support of the Municipality and the Superintendence, we are ready to give life to one of the most magical places in the city of Naples: the former military hospital, in the Spanish Quarters.
This new project, full of emotions, will embrace the legacy of Palazzo Fondi enriching it. We will work to create a place that celebrates art, culture, creativity, a place to build with and for the city of Naples”, says Simone Mazzarelli CEO of Urban Value.
The Regional Director of the State Property Agency, Mario Parlagreco, states that “the result obtained by Urban Value has proven to be exceptional and beyond all initial expectations, even in terms of social value. Palazzo Fondi is only the first of the properties that will be able to benefit from this innovative “temporary use” formula, allowing the community, for an increasingly international Naples, to enjoy a heritage, also of immense historical and artistic value, whose restoration, regeneration and refunctionalization times are often significant.
Among the new initiatives planned, we can mention the openings of important state-owned compendiums of San Giovanni a Carbonara, in the historic center, and of the former Military Hospital, the green lung of the Spanish quarters. Business excellences, such as the accredited Urban Value, are the protagonists of the enhancement phase, strongly desired by the State Property Agency and included in a broader urban regeneration strategy promoted by Mayor Manfredi and Councilor Lieto”.
