On January 11, 2024 at 10.30 am, at the State Archives of Napoli, numerous important historical documents owned by the State will be returned by the Commander of the Unit for the Protection of Cultural Heritage (TPC) of Naples, to the Director of the State Archives of Naples, Candida Carrino, in the presence of the Superintendent of Archives for Campania, Gabriele Capone.
These include over three hundred historical documents dating from 1500 to 1800, dating back to the Neapolitan Bourbon period, held in the State Archives of Naples. Among these, the most important are: a large Manifesto of Joachim Napoleon, King of the Two Sicilies, with handwritten annotations from May 1811; a Journal of the Journey of Their Majesties the King and Queen from Naples to Madrid in 1829; and a handwritten Letter from Maria Amalia of Bourbon addressed to Ferdinand II, King of the Two Sicilies.
This significant recovery was the result of investigative efforts resulting from monitoring e-commerce platforms for the sale of historical documents. The investigation, coordinated by the Public Prosecutor's Offices of Parma, Naples North, Salerno, and Santa Maria Capua Vetere, led to the identification and seizure of documents of significant historical and cultural importance, clearly belonging to state property, returning them to their original location for public access.
The delivery confirms the importance of the collaboration between the Carabinieri and public and private entities, which has enabled the identification of important historical testimonies despite some documents having never been entered into the "Database of Illegally Stolen Cultural Heritage," the largest database of stolen works of art in the world managed by the Command for the Protection of Cultural Heritage.
