Naples, hit and killed on Corso Umberto by a magistrate's escort car

The Carabiniere escorting a magistrate from the Naples Public Prosecutor's Office who struck and killed an elderly man and injured a woman while crossing the street on Corso Umberto yesterday morning is under investigation for vehicular homicide and assault.

The victim was called Francesco Esposito and he was 72 years old. The accident occurred yesterday morning around 8,30 am near theAnnunziata hospital.

Together with Esposito there was a woman of Ukrainian origins, resident in Naples and two years younger. Aarmored car, on escort duty and driven by a carabiniere with another soldier on board, ran over them.

The accident occurred while the armored car was coming from Piazza Garibaldi and was heading towards piazza Bovio, taking the plunge Corso UmbertoDespite the pedestrians being in the crosswalk, the car failed to stop in time, causing a violent impact.

The conditions of both victims, especially Francesco Esposito, immediately appeared critical. Many people present at the scene heard the loud bang caused by the collision.

The 118 emergency services intervened promptly to assist the victims. The woman was transported to theHospital of the Sea, while Francesco Esposito was initially taken to the Pellegrini hospital and subsequently transferred to the Napoli East in an attempt to save his life.

 The woman is admitted to the Ospedale del Mare with a reserved prognosis.

Unfortunately, despite his efforts, Esposito died after several hours of agony. The woman, still hospitalized at Ospedale del Mare, has multiple fractures and will require surgery. The prognosis remains guarded.

Municipal police officers responded to carry out the necessary investigations, while the local police road accident unit—as reported by Il Mattina and Repubblica Napoli—is responsible for conducting the investigation to clarify the exact circumstances of the accident. This tragic event has left the community grieving the loss of Francesco Esposito and hoping for a full recovery for the woman involved.
