The company Originali Vintage Sunglasses srl condemns and distances itself from the video released in recent days regarding Malaterra glasses.
In a press release, the company explains that “this video was neither produced nor published by Originali Vintage Sunglasses srl and spreads a misleading message that is totally opposed to the ethics underlying the project”.
And in fact it is specified that “the manufacturer of Malaterra glasses has nothing to do with the creation, distribution and concept of the promotional video published on TikTok by @optikstore.
Malaterra is a social denunciation project with a deliberately provocative aesthetic, born within a Design Contest in collaboration with the University of Florence and the LaMo frame laboratory.
The concept takes inspiration from Banksy's work Madonna with Pistol, which is located in the Neapolitan capital and which illustrates the Madonna adoring the weapon, a symbol of the contradictory link between criminal organizations and religious beliefs.
Similarly, the design of the Malaterra model focuses on the paradoxical relationship between religiosity and criminality, observing Naples as a paradigm of the world, highlighting how in every metropolitan city apparently irreconcilable lights and shadows coexist. The reference to the work of the British artist is also present in the temples, as a dichotomy between good and evil, on one is depicted the Veiled Christ, one of the most famous Neapolitan sculptures by Giuseppe Sanmartino, while on the other is depicted a semi-automatic pistol.
The model's monolithic and angular design alludes to the hardness of certain peripheral environments, while the characteristic shape of the temples recalls the geometry of the Vele di Scampia, which have become, in spite of themselves, a symbol of the Neapolitan Camorra. The alternation of reliefs and grooves highlights how the areas at the bottom are opaque compared to those in the foreground, a metaphor for life in big cities.
While the bright parts such as the mirrored filters and the branded rivet, represent an element of hope, meaning that even in the hardest situations something beautiful can be born, which in fact today we find in art and music.
The pencil case also takes up the geometry of the Vele di Scampia, but also recalls the design of a gun holster, and represents the hope that instead of violence, difficulties can be faced with art and culture”, concludes the press release signed by the legal representative of the company, Ciro Lago.
