By the beginning of 2025, Neapolitans will be able to enjoy the new face of the Villa Comunale del Virgilian park. The recovery works should start next March considering that the companies have already been identified.

The two parks will undergo comprehensive restoration work, including the botanical gardens, the artwork within them, the architectural areas, the paving, and the accesses.

These are two very important and eagerly awaited projects," said Mayor Gaetano Manfredi. "The planning process was lengthy because they are historic and protected parks, requiring lengthy negotiations and discussions with the Superintendency to ensure the projects were structurally and botanically compatible with historical requirements.

The real challenge then - he continued - is management and maintenance". As regards the Villa Comunale, the interventions concern: the protection of the botanical apparatus by replacing diseased or already cut down plants, the maintenance of existing ones and the reconfiguration of the flowerbeds;

The restoration of artwork and furnishings; the consolidation of the three play areas into a single play area located in the center of the villa near the ice rink; the redevelopment of the tuff paving with a stabilized drainage mix; and the restoration of the lighting, video surveillance, water, sewer, and irrigation systems.

Regarding Virgiliano Park, the work will include the redevelopment of the Mediterranean garden, the plateau, the auditorium, the pine forest, and the viewpoints; the children's areas, with the construction of a classroom and a play area with a cable car and a children's bike path; the redevelopment of the paths; the restyling of the fountain; interventions to maintain and integrate the tree population through the planting of new specimens of native shrubs; and the restoration of the entrance portal and the forecourt, including the installation of video surveillance at the entrances.

"With these projects, we are giving back to the city two of Naples' most beautiful places," emphasized Vincenzo Santagada, Councilor for Parks and Gardens, "from an artistic, cultural, and landscape perspective."

The work will proceed "in complete safety" without the need to close the parks and is made possible thanks to funding from the Metropolitan City's Strategic Plan and the National Recovery and Resilience Plan (NRRP) totaling €8 million (€4 million for each park). But the administration will not only redevelop the Villa Comunale and the Virgiliano.

Redevelopment works will also start at Scampia park (1 million); Gaetano Errico park (500 thousand euros); San Gennaro park (600 thousand euros); De Filippo park (500 thousand euros); Poggio park (700 thousand euros) and work has already started, in November 2023, at Mascagna park (450 thousand euros).
