Palma Campania, Nello Donnarumma: the "sheriff" mayor who made the Bengalis flee

Aniello Donnarumma, 38 years old, known as Nello, is the mayor of Palma Campania since 2018. Last May, he won the elections with 64% of the vote, confirming his position as mayor of the Carnival city with a coalition of three civic lists. For two years, he has been a member of Brothers of Italy, Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni's party.

This morning, the Carabinieri served him with a house arrest warrant for corruption and other crimes. His business card reads, "Young dreamer in love with his homeland."

In recent years, the young mayor of Palma Campania had made a name for himself with some "sheriff-like" initiatives towards the city's heavily populated Bangladeshi community, imposing an Italian language exam and other restrictions on Bangladeshi citizens residing in Palma Campania.

In a recent interview he explained his political thinking: "The problem is respecting the rules, that's all.

I occasionally hear about a lack of integration, but the truth is that in Palma Campania it's not a question of racism, much less intolerance towards the Bangladeshi community, with whose representatives I speak and have spoken in the past. But there are laws, and these laws must be respected.
