The Ministry of University and Research is seriously considering the opportunity to revolutionize the system of access to medicine.
Following the postponement of the 2024 selection sessions and the recent ruling by the Lazio Regional Administrative Court, several political proposals are being examined by the respective committees in the Chamber and Senate.
The predominant proposal would be to introduce a filter period that allows students to attend characterizing courses, the passing of which would determine admission to Medicine. This innovation would come into force starting from the 2024/25 academic year. The most suitable legislative instruments to establish which, how many and with what methods to pass the exams will be defined in the coming months.
The possibility of using different faculties than Medicine is also being considered in order to avoid congestion and organize the characterizing courses. The selection tests will also undergo changes.
The idea of using questions taken from an open and public database, thus overcoming the criticisms of the TAR, seems interesting for the Anief union. The next selection will be based on these tests, the access method to which will be established through an ongoing parliamentary process.
The Minister of Universities, Anna Maria Bernini, has made herself available to dialogue with all political forces and actors involved. The best form and framework for this discussion will be sought, and it is assumed that hearings in Parliament are the most institutionally appropriate context to address this issue.
