“Cases of assaults against professionals working on ambulances are increasing dramatically”. The latest in the province of Napoli, “just two days ago, where a nurse was attacked by a drunk patient on board the ambulance that was headed to the hospital in Frattamaggiore”.
A case that consolidates the alarming data "on violence against nurses which, in Campania alone, are nothing short of shocking.
In this 2024 we have even reached the number of 7 official assaults for the ASL Napoli 2 Nord, rising to 11 including Naples city and reaching 15 cases considering the hospitals of the ASL Napoli 3 Sud”, recalls Antonio De Palma, national president of Nursing Up. An escalation, continues De Palma, “to the attention of the Neapolitan prefecture which has decided to expand the number of police squads in the city's health facilities.
A reflection is necessary: but do we have to wait for the episodes to reach this point of severity to decide to strengthen public safety measures? We are sorry but we are not at all satisfied that these interventions arrive only after such a high number of attacks, and it is also clear that they may still not be sufficient.
We will verify, based on the new provisions, with our local contacts, whether the officers are really present”, in the hospitals where there are police stations, “even at night and on weekends: we have to do it, now the lives of the nurses are really at stake”.
Citizens "are exasperated by the growing discomfort and poor service that is recorded within hospitals, in a widespread climate of bad culture they place all the responsibilities on healthcare professionals, while we must not and cannot forget our 118 nurses, in particular our women on board the ambulances", concludes De Palma.
