Elderly scam in Padua: 18-year-old from Pomigliano arrested

An 18 year old young man from Pomigliano D'Arco he was arrested by the Padua police after having defrauded, with an accomplice, not yet identified, a 78-year-old man resident in Cadoneghe, in the province of Padua.

The two defrauded the victim into giving them over €3.500, falsely claiming that they needed to pay a lawyer to assist their son who was involved in an alleged accident.

The Euganean Flying Squad identified the young man, following reports from elderly people who had suffered similar scams.

The eighteen-year-old disguised himself as a lawyer, while his accomplice, still unidentified, pretended to be a police marshal.

Together, they contacted the elderly man early yesterday afternoon, convincing him to hand over cash and various gold items as security for the release of his son, allegedly involved in the accident, following the classic scam of a fake accident. After receiving his money, the young man left the elderly man's residence.

Meanwhile, the police, alerted by reports to the emergency number 113, conducted investigations on passengers from Southern Italy who had arrived at the Padua station.

They identified the young man who had arrived by train in the morning, spending some time inside the station. Appearing nervous and frequently glancing at his cell phone, the young man received text messages and brief calls before walking away.

The officers stationed themselves on the tracks, confident that the eighteen-year-old would return to the station after completing the scam, intending to leave the city with the loot. Their prediction came true, and the officers stopped him, finding €3.500 and several gold items on him. Analysis of his cell phone allowed them to trace the identity of the elderly man from Cadoneghe, confirming that he had fallen victim to the scam.
