The Municipality of Pomigliano d'Arco has been declared "plastic free ," an award granted by the nonprofit organization Plastic Free Onlus. The announcement was made during a press conference at the Chamber of Deputies, where Pomigliano d'Arco was honored along with 110 other local governments, only seven of which are in Campania . The award, which will be presented on March 9th in Milan, recognizes the municipalities' efforts in combating illegal waste disposal, raising awareness in the area, managing urban waste, and collaborating with the nonprofit organization.
Fabio Rampelli , Vice President of the Chamber of Deputies, declared: "We applaud all 111 local governments for the commendable actions they are taking in their local communities ." He then praised Plastic Free Onlus for its commitment to engaging more and more municipalities in the shared goal of reducing plastic waste, adding: "Unfortunately, islands of plastic are also a reality in our seas, and we must work not only to collect it but also to ensure it no longer leaks into the environment. We must leave future generations with a better planet that isn't becoming poorer every day."
Luca De Gaetano , founder and president of Plastic Free Onlus, emphasized: "Since last year, we've seen a nearly double number of awards, demonstrating the growing attention that municipal administrations are placing on this prize ." He also emphasized the importance of concrete environmental actions and stated: "We will continue to raise awareness among more and more citizens, also thanks to the active involvement of local administrators, which is crucial to having a significant impact on the various areas of our splendid Italy."
Pomigliano Mayor Raffaele Russo and Environment Councilor Maria Rosaria Toscano make no secret of their satisfaction with this significant achievement by the municipal administration in just a few months: "We are absolutely satisfied and pleased with this success for our municipality. We have worked hard over the past few months to achieve this goal. This achievement is a testament to the municipal administration's commitment to this issue."
It is no coincidence that the plastic-free interventions represent an integral part, or rather the third area, of the overall environmental defense project launched by the Municipality of Pomigliano d'Arco, "Pomigliano+Green". The Municipality aims to significantly reduce the use of single-use plastic in the community. Through the promotion of sustainable alternatives, such as reusable containers and biodegradable products, and the introduction of policies to limit the distribution of single-use plastic in public places, the Municipality of Pomigliano d'Arco is committed to fighting plastic pollution. By reducing dependence on plastic, the aim is to protect the environment from the damage caused by plastic and its derivatives.
