Revolutionary, irreducible and courageous women who broke taboos and rules, overturned customs despite having lived far from the most evolved lands of the North. Courageous, stubborn and nonconformist women who fought to realize dreams, pursue ideas and models, affirm their sexuality and personality. Women who, through their experience, left a mark in the literary, poetic, artistic, professional, political and religious world. They faced challenges unthinkable for their time and fought in favor of ideals for which they sacrificed themselves but, above all, they marked out unprecedented paths, creating the basis for a more aware, independent and free female conscience. Many of these figures have not had the deserved historical study. This book, therefore, wants to fill, without claiming to be exhaustive, a gap in our memory, drawing attention to the role of women in the social and civil growth of Southern Italy. Today's women owe a lot to them and still have a lot to learn from them.
Riccardo Riccardi, an essayist and journalist from Bari, has been investigating the lesser-known aspects of Southern Italy for years. He has published: I Pomarici – History of an ancient southern family (2003 and 2008); The enterprise of Felice Garibaldi and the Risorgimento in Puglia (1835-1861) (2007 and 2010); Album Lucano – Families, characters and rediscovered images (2008); A southern bourgeois family – I Porro di Andria (2013); Spice shops and pharmacies in the Bari area (2015); Matera's redemption – The vocation of the city's bourgeoisie to “do” and Matera – A brief history of the city of “Sassi” (Les Flaneurs Edizioni, 2018); The Ulmo Dynasty (2019); Lucania Felix (2021); Puglia, Journey into historic homes (2021 and 2022).
He collaborates with the magazine “Wine Fashion Europe” and with many other magazines. He was the artistic director of the events “Aspettando il 2019” in Matera and “Il Paese dei Libri” in Montescaglioso.
