2024 began as 2023 ended, with high atmospheric pressure and temperatures 7-8 degrees above seasonal averages.

In the Center-South, daytime temperatures reach 20 degrees, with night-time lows struggling to fall below 10-14°C.

Meteorologists confirm the positive temperature anomaly, with values exceeding the January average: in Milan, the maximum temperature is expected to be around 4-5°C, but 10-11°C is expected. The Po Valley, due to low clouds and fog, is the coolest area, while an almost spring-like climate is recorded in central and southern Italy, with maximum temperatures in Rome and Naples consistently above 15°C.

The anomalous climate persists also in the mountains, with the zero limit above 2800 meters in the North and up to 3700 meters in the South. However, a change is coming with the Epiphany Cyclone. Already from Friday, bad weather will hit the North and part of the Center, extending to the South for Epiphany. The minimum temperatures will remain mild, but the maximums will decrease due to the bad weather.

Before the Epiphany Cyclone arrives, both today and tomorrow, high pressure will dominate, disturbed only locally by humid and warm south-westerly currents, with mostly sunny weather except for isolated showers on the Tyrrhenian coast.

The turning point will come on January 5th, when a violent low pressure system from the North Atlantic will bring heavy rain to Liguria and Upper Tuscany, followed by snowfall in the Alps, reaching hilly altitudes. Epiphany will mark a change, with a drop in temperatures and further precipitation. Starting on January 7th, Arctic air masses will cause a marked drop in temperatures across the entire peninsula.

In short, the week of January 8th to 14th will see the arrival of true winter across Europe, with the possibility of snowfall even at low altitudes in central Italy. After temperatures exceed 20 degrees Celsius, the hexagonal snow crystals could suddenly remind us that we're in winter, the traditionally coldest time of year.
