The renovation phase of the Rome department at Poggioreale prison has been successfully completed.

Previously, this section was one of the most run-down within the facility, but now boasts fully equipped detention rooms with refrigerators, bathrooms with showers, and a new set of mattresses and pillows. Furthermore, spaces have been created for work activities and social interaction among inmates.

The department, with a capacity of 153 places, will be entirely dedicated to the care and treatment of drug-addicted prisoners, supervised by the Addictions department of the ASL Napoli 1.

Last Friday, the regional superintendent Lucia Castellano, the president of the Surveillance Court Patricia Myrrha and the director of the "Giuseppe Salvia" Poggioreale prison, Charles Berdini, they paid a visit to the department.

The success of this redevelopment project was made possible thanks to the joint efforts of the Department of Penitentiary Administration, the Campania Regional Office, and the Institute's Management. Currently, Poggioreale, the "IV Piano" project for the care and treatment of drug addicts is underway, in collaboration with the private social sector (Consorzio Gesco).

The renovation of the unit and its subsequent exclusive use for drug-addicted inmates, in accordance with Article 96 of Consolidated Law 3019/90, will allow for greater diversification of initiatives and the use of more suitable spaces for the care and guidance of drug addicts toward release.

The statement highlights the collaborative efforts between institutions, the impetus of the Public Prosecutor's Office, the National Ombudsman, and the supervisory judiciary, and the prompt response of the prison administration, which have led to significant results in terms of dignity in detention and the provision of therapeutic and rehabilitative services.

Special thanks go to the prison staff who, together with the contractor, helped expedite the redevelopment process. Renovating and improving the facility's livability, resulting in a reduction in overcrowding, are among the prison administration's priorities.
