Salerno, newborn positive for cocaine, meningitis confirmed: he is very serious

The three-month-old baby arrived at the pediatric hospital in red code Santobono from Naples, is currently in very serious conditions and hospitalized in intensive care due to meningitis.

From the very beginning, his clinical condition appeared extremely serious, with an imminent threat to his life, requiring urgent transfer to the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit, where he was intubated and placed on mechanical ventilation.

The tests conducted at Santobono confirmed the cerebral hemorrhage previously identified during a CT scan performed at the Ruggi hospital in Salerno.

. At Santobono, the newborn underwent a nuclear magnetic resonance imaging, followed by an emergency operation in the Neurosurgery Operating Room for the placement of an intracranial pressure monitoring catheter.

During the procedure, a cerebrospinal fluid sample was taken that tested positive for Haemophilus influenzae, confirming the initial diagnosis of bacterial meningitis upon admission to the intensive care unit. The newborn is currently undergoing treatment and constant monitoring.
