The Great Pompeii becomes “small” to satisfy the needs of an ever-growing public, which also includes many children and young people.

In 2023, the Park recorded the highest number of visitors in history, over 4 million. “It's time to diversify activities and visit proposals - Director Zuchtriegel emphasizes - taking into account the characteristics of a heterogeneous audience in terms of age groups, interests and sensibilities.”

2024 will see initiatives for families planned, with dedicated spaces such as a Children's Museum, to historical re-enactments, but also to the valorisation of the sites of the Great Pompeii, such as the next reopening of the Libero D'Orsi Archaeological Museum expanded.

“This year’s priorities are to protect the intimacy of an experience that is great precisely because it makes us see the small things of ancient life and to enhance the offering for girls and boys who come to Pompeii. We can learn from the little ones how to see the world with ever new eyes and rediscover our inner child.”

A new educational center for children will open, the Children Museum managed in the form of a partnership with laboratories and spaces where children can entertain themselves even while their parents enjoy the visit; the tender to assign the service is concluding these days.

"We will work on re-enactments, content and itineraries to tell the story of the ancient city to the whole family. And we will continue to invest in apparently small realities, outside the ancient city but which are part of the Great Pompei, that large widespread park that includes Boscoreale, Castellammare di Stabia, Torre Annunziata, Terzigno, Lettere and Poggiomarino. There is a part of Pompeii's history there to be discovered that will also help us better channel the flows that are continually growing.”

The Archaeological Park of Pompeii in 2023, with 4.079.235, has reached its record figure. With an increase in visitors of 33,23% and a related revenue (over 41 million euros) of + 52,44% compared to the previous year (2022) and of 3,57% and + 27,14% compared to 2019, the pre-pandemic year among those with the highest influx to date.

A significant increase in visitors, despite the closures for restoration and safety works that affected the Palace of Quisisana (which houses the D'Orsi Museum) which will open soon, the Villa Arianna in Castellammare di Stabia, and the Antiquarium of Boscoreale reopened in October 2023 and which immediately registered great interest and visits.

There will be no shortage of major evening events at the Park, which—in addition to the nighttime walks—will be split into two dedicated and integrated festivals this year. One will feature drama at the Teatro Grande, where the established Pompeii Theatrum Mundi continues its run, and the other will be a musical festival featuring international artists at the Amphitheater.

Last year, the theatre and concert events recorded over 15 visitors, in addition to the 4300 visitors of the evening walks. “An important number that underlines one of the objectives of the Park, which is to encourage the permanent presence of tourism in the area through a quality expansion in the offer of archaeological sites”.
