A car traveling over 100 kilometers per hour in central Naples hit a 21-year-old student who was crossing the street at a pedestrian crossing on Corso Garibaldi on Tuesday evening.
According to witnesses and local residents who spoke to Francesco Emilio Borrelli, a member of parliament for the Green-Left alliance, the car violently threw the victim across the street, damaging several parked cars.
The images of the accident were captured by the external security cameras of a supermarket and shared by Borrelli on his Facebook profile.
One witness described the accident as "traumatic," suggesting that speed bumps be installed on Corso Garibaldi to slow cars.
Borrelli agreed, noting that the accident appears to have been caused by a combination of excessive speed, recklessness, and irresponsibility.
“I don't know the boy who was hit but I saw the video from some surveillance cameras and it was traumatic. Wouldn't it be possible to install speed bumps on Corso Garibaldi? They really go too fast, there's no limit, they don't have brakes, they don't respect anything, in the evening it becomes a race track. In that boy's place it could have been me or someone from my family.”, one of the witnesses said.
Borrelli: "We must take tough action against the investor."
"It seems clear that this time too the cause of the accident is linked to excessive speed, imprudence and irresponsibility. For this reason we will have to take harsh action against the driver. We must put an end to this madness and these massacres, the highway code must be reformed.
We join the residents' appeal to request speed bumps and safety devices on C.so Garibaldi and all those streets at risk. We must act quickly. City centers are not Formula 1 tracks where you can race at full speed"
