The text by the Bosnian playwright is based on a news story that took place in a Balkan country, which turns into a universal story.
From 1 to 4 February 2024, at New Theater of Naples, the performance is staged under the direction of Paola Rota. The show starts at 21.00 pm.
The story begins in 2014, when seven Bosnian girls, aged between thirteen and fifteen, return pregnant from a school trip to Sarajevo. This event provokes the anger of their parents and public opinion. Hence the work of Tanja Sljivar, “Like all free girls”, which explores this unusual episode.
The production is presented by Teatro Stabile di Torino – Teatro Nazionale, 369gradi and PAV, as part of Fabulamundi Playwriting Europe. The translation is by Manuela Orazi. The work offers each protagonist an ambivalent narrative space, where it seems that the girls are ready to say everything, except how it really happened.
The protagonists, played by Irene Petris, Simonetta Solder, Liliana Massari, Sofia Celentano, Sara Mafodda, Martina Massaro, Sylvia Milton, Swami Rotolo, use a language that combines informal slang and adult reflections, exploring the limits of female physical and sexual freedom.
The structure of the play includes seven girls, seven scenes and seven monologues, which together outline the theme of the drama. Here, the unreliability of the young girls is the only constant when it comes to memories and statements.
The girls tell their version of the facts, alternating choral scenes with monologues. They share secrets and reflect on the condition of women, the paradox of motherhood and the complexity of adolescent desires.
The show is distinguished by the absence of moral judgments, focusing instead on the exploration and narration of the self. The patriarchal structure in which the protagonists grew up emerges. The role of men, "accomplices" in the real event and in the text, is neglected, leaving the blame and responsibility to the girls.
This comedy avoids investigating the “how” and “why” of the event, preferring to show the escape attempt and the small revolution of a group of dreamers.
The play, shrouded in mystery, challenges the conventions of society and places a group of teenagers as the architects of this cultural revolution.
