Torre Annunziata. Two young footballers, both 21 years old and former members of the Benevento C series team, were arrested and placed under house arrest after being caught in the street beating up an acquaintance of theirs, a 19 year old presumably linked to the Gionta clan.
The violent attack, which arose from trivial reasons, also involved the Carabinieri who intervened during a night-time check.
The two footballers, Emanuele Agnello, an attacking midfielder who made his debut in Serie B with Benevento, and who in recent days was sold to Locri in Serie D, and Francesco Perlingieri, a right back with experience in Serie C with Paganese, were arrested for assaulting the young man and resisting a public official. Despite the intervention of the carabinieri, the two continued the assault, also hitting the officers.
After his arrest, Agnello had his contract with Benevento terminated, while Perlingieri had already been a free agent since last November. Both ended up under house arrest.
Both players, originally from Scafati and raised in the Benevento youth sector, had some experience among the professionals, but this year they were on the fringes of the first team. The investigations of the Carabinieri - as Il Mattino anticipates - are trying to understand the reason for the attack on the 19-year-old, who was treated in the emergency room and deemed curable in a few days.
Emanuele Agnello is the nephew of Alfonso convicted for links with the Gionta clan
The personal stories of the two footballers are linked to the neighbourhood of Annunziata Tower, where they were caught on the street. In particular, Agnello has a surname that carries weight in the area, as his uncle Alfonso Agnello was initially suspected of the murder of journalist Giancarlo Siani in 1985, although he was later cleared of that charge but convicted of other murders linked to the Camorra.
