Tripolino Giannini, the oldest man in Italy, died in his home in Cecina, in the province of Livorno, at the age of 111.
The news of his passing was confirmed by his son Romano, who said: "I thought he was immortal, and... instead!" The Municipality of Cecina expressed its condolences to the family on behalf of the entire community.
Tripolino Giannini, in addition to holding the title of the longest-lived person in Italy, also boasted a long membership in the Bersaglieri, the corps of the Italian Army in which he had proudly served throughout his life.
A life full of experiences
Born in Cecina on August 20, 1912, Tripolino Giannini had worked as a merchant, managing a fruit and vegetable shop. His life spanned a vast historical period, having lived through and witnessed significant events such as the two world wars, the election of numerous Popes, and the transition from Monarchy to Republic.

He had always enjoyed robust health and could boast of having survived various epidemics, from the Spanish flu, which struck Italy during his childhood, to Covid, which he survived unscathed despite his advanced age.
Tripolino was a passionate athlete and a pioneer in sporting activities during an era when they were primarily reserved for the noble and wealthy. In 1929, he participated in the first Targa Cecina foot race, finishing fourth. Despite the passing years, he remained a great athlete. Until recently, as a starter, he still contributed to the event that was so dear to him.
An indelible memory
On August 20, 2023, on his 111th birthday, Tripolino Giannini was celebrated not only by his family, but also by a delegation from the Municipality and local branches of the National Association of Bersaglieri. His long and eventful life will remain an indelible mark on the memory of the Cecina community and our country.
