He still had the jewelry given to him by his victim on him. He kept it in his underwear and inside a fanny pack.
Thirty-six years old, originally from Benevento, he found the patrol police waiting for him just outside the elevator of the building where he allegedly carried out a fraud well-articulated against an elderly couple.
A husband and wife had been contacted on their home phone by a self-styled “carabiniere” who informed them of a serious car accident caused by their son to the detriment of a woman. The seriousness of the news led the couple to provide personal details as well as the private numbers of their cell phones.
Details used shortly after with a second phone call, with which they managed to separate the two by inviting the man to immediately reach the nearest Carabinieri station and the woman to stay at home, in constant telephone contact with the self-styled member of the police force.
Remaining on the phone with the woman, the scammer managed to alarm the elderly woman with further details about the seriousness of the situation and to confuse her further with the false voice of her desperate son asking for help. Then another accomplice entered the scene, this time contacting the woman on her cell phone and introducing himself as her son's lawyer.
He would have made arrangements with the relatives of the person hit and agreed on a sum of 7.500 euros to resolve the matter and get his son out of trouble. If he did not have the money, however, he could have delivered the jewels kept in the house to a trusted person sent by the lawyer.
Having fallen into the trap, the woman prepared the valuables and handed them over to the indicated person, who showed up shortly after. The same person who, ready to run away with the jewels, was intercepted, blocked and arrested by the Flying Squad police.
The Carabinieri, where the scammer himself had invited her husband to go, raised the alarm with the “real” police. Having understood what was happening, they immediately alerted the forces present in the area. The man was therefore arrested red-handed by the police for aggravated fraud and for possession and fabrication of false identification documents, and also reported for resisting a police officer and refusing to provide information about his personal identity.
