5 scams targeting the elderly foiled thanks to information provided by the Carabinieri and the Prefecture of Avellino.
Law enforcement recently thwarted five cases of attempted fraud against elderly residents in Solofra and Serino, in the province of Avellino. The scammers, operating in the same way, impersonated members of the police force and demanded large sums of money to avoid the arrest of an alleged relative involved in a road accident.
Fortunately, the elderly people, aged between 70 and 90, were able to recognise the attempted scam and promptly reported the incident to the police, who began investigations to identify those responsible.
These episodes are the result of information campaigns promoted by the Carabinieri and the Prefecture of Avellino, which aim to raise awareness among the population, especially the most vulnerable, on the risks associated with scams and frauds.
Collaboration between institutions and the readiness of seniors to report scam attempts are crucial to combating this type of crime. It is important to spread awareness of these fraudulent practices and encourage active participation of the community in identifying and reporting suspicious situations.
At a time when crime seeks to exploit the vulnerability of the elderly, it is essential that authorities continue to promote information and prevention initiatives, in order to protect the most vulnerable citizens from all forms of abuse and deception.
