Last night, the ManiTese Campania headquarters in Piazza Cavour in Naples was the scene of unprecedented vandalism: unknown individuals not only damaged the shop and stole fair trade products but also destroyed the windows.

"This incident is part of a broader context of insecurity that, unfortunately, regularly affects our volunteers, victims of unfortunate incidents throughout the year. This situation reflects the constant complaints, raised for years together with citizens, about the lack of safety around Piazza Cavour," they explained in a statement posted on social media.

Mani Tese Campania, present in Naples since 1992, while the headquarters in Piazza Cavour has been open since 2004, is committed to selling used items daily to fund projects in developing countries, hosting various organizations in our shop, such as the Committee for Peace and Disarmament.

Through school projects, we are dedicated to educating people about citizenship, critical consumption, and building a more just world, despite the security challenges surrounding the square. Furthermore, we must once again denounce the extremely poor sanitary conditions in Piazza Cavour, overrun by insects and rats, and human (there are no longer any drinking fountains or public restrooms) and animal excrement.

This is an intolerable situation that must be addressed without proclamations or promises, but through concrete action. Once again, we find ourselves having to demand action.

The solidarity of the Cgil Naples and Campania

The Cgil Napoli Campania expresses its "full solidarity and outrage at the vile act that struck the Mani Tese association headquarters last night." The incident occurred in Piazza Cavour.

"Unfortunately," the union's secretariat wrote in a statement, "we note that this is not the first time the shop and the association's headquarters have been the target of attacks and thefts in an area of the city that, despite being absolutely central, has been abandoned to decay and neglect."

"The devastation and theft suffered by the association, which for years has worked alongside the most vulnerable, reaffirming the values of solidarity and peace—values also embraced by the CGIL—requires a strong response from local institutions, starting with the Municipality, which must make the safety and redevelopment of the entire Piazza Cavour and the surrounding gardens an immediate priority so that the association's workers, as well as the many citizens who flock to that area," concludes the CGIL Naples and Campania.
