The bishop of Naples, Don Mimmo Battaglia, reiterated his strong stance against the law on differentiated autonomy.
In a long reflection, the prelate affirmed that the proposal of differentiated autonomy is "a selfish will of the rich and of the rich territories, a perverse project of division of Italy".
According to Don Battaglia, the word “differentiated” means that autonomy is not the same for all regions, but differentiates between the strong ones, which with autonomy will become stronger, and the weak ones, which paradoxically will become weaker.
The bishop of Napoli he also stressed that the Senate's decision to approve the law on differentiated autonomy is serious because it occurs “when two weaknesses are dangerously intertwined, that of politics and that of the South”.
“This is enough to ignite the most attentive minds and the most sensitive hearts”, said Don Battaglia. “And to better understand that that word, accompanied by the shortest article, incomprehensible to the poor people, the Lep (this too to cover up the cunning of the powerful), will be misleading even when the State, which no longer has money, finds the many billions that would be needed to implement them”.
Don Battaglia concluded his reflection with an exhortation: “May the Gospel and the Constitution, in this complex and difficult time, which calls for the generosity and political commitment of all, take away our sleep, become a burden on our conscience, until every reform and every law, even the smallest, is oriented to the good of all, starting with the most fragile”.
The position of the bishop of Naples is shared by many observers
The position of the bishop of Naples is shared by many observers, who believe that the law on differentiated autonomy is an unjust and dangerous proposal.
First of all, the proposal is unfair because it creates an unequal treatment among the Italian regions. The richest regions, in fact, will obtain more powers and resources, while the poorest regions will be left behind.
Secondly, the proposal is dangerous because it risks increasing divisions within Italy. A divided Italy is a weaker, less competitive and less united Italy.
A rethinking of the proposal for differentiated autonomy is necessary, so that it is a fair and inclusive proposal, which does not create divisions within the country.
