In the summer of 2019, all the press organs spread a worrying news regarding the arrest of two entrepreneurs involved in the demolition works of the Morandi Bridge, accused of the crime of fictitious registration, aggravated by the alleged mafia involvement.

Ferdinand Varlese, an entrepreneur with a criminal record, was considered the real manager of the company Technodem, which had obtained the delicate demolition work as a subcontractor. It was assumed that the company, with alleged mafia connections, was formally registered in the name of the mother-in-law Marigliano Recommends.

The accusation brought by the Genoa District Anti-Mafia Office, based on wiretaps and reinforced by Varlese's admissions during questioning, was devastating. The company was not only barred from the work, but also had its real estate and bank accounts containing large sums of money seized.

The sentence was confirmed both in the first instance and on appeal, but was then temporarily overturned following the appeal presented by the lawyer Dario Vannetiello to the Court of Cassation. The Second Section of the Supreme Court decided to overturn the sentence of 3 years and 4 months in prison, ordering a new trial before the Court of Appeal.

The turning point in the prosecution's case occurred during the new trial at the Territorial Court of Appeal, Third Criminal Section. The latter, agreeing with the legal arguments advanced by attorney Vannetiello, acquitted the entrepreneurs and also revoked the previous seizure of their assets. Consequently, it ordered the return of the real estate and the money in the bank accounts to their rightful owners.
