A 36-year-old prisoner of Indian origin, awaiting trial for sexual crimes, was found hanged in the bathroom of his cell in the precautionary ward of the Latina prison.
The Uilpa union denounces the ongoing "massacre" in Italian prisons: "This is the 17th suicide since the beginning of the year," said Gennarino De Fazio, Secretary General of the UILPA Penitentiary Police. "The rescue efforts of the Penitentiary Police were to no avail."
De Fazio criticizes the lack of concrete solutions from politicians: "Since the beginning of the year, 17 people have taken their own lives in prison, and a prison officer committed suicide. The massacre continues, while the mainstream politicians and the government are in no mood to offer any solutions. Not even the Head of the Department of Penitentiary Administration, Giovanni Russo, has been able to offer concrete and immediate solutions."
The Secretary General of the UILPA Penitentiary Police emphasizes the gravity of the situation: "What is happening in prisons cannot leave us indifferent. A system that records suicides, murders, fights, riots, attacks on prison officers, illicit trafficking, and potential degeneration cannot be considered ordinary. It cannot be contained with ordinary tools."
