A gas leak caused an explosion in an apartment on the slopes of Vesuvius, in Torre del Greco , in the province of Naples. The explosion, which occurred shortly before midnight yesterday, caused the death of an elderly couple, Rodolfo Iovine and Anna Pagano.
A third person, Rosa Pagano , Anna's sister, was seriously injured and was hospitalized at the Cardarelli hospital in Naples. Two other families were evacuated from the building.
According to initial reconstructions, the gas leak originated in the kitchen. The explosion caused the collapse of a bedroom wall and a fire in the building. The lifeless bodies of the couple were found by rescuers under the rubble.
Firefighters from Torre del Greco and Ponticelli responded to the scene and ordered the evacuation of two other families living on the ground floor of the same building. The Torre Annunziata Public Prosecutor's Office has opened an investigation to determine the causes of the tragedy.
The mayor has declared a day of mourning
In the next few hours there will be an inspection by the investigators. The news has caused great grief in the community of Torre del Greco.
The mayor, Mennella, expressed his deep sorrow for the tragedy and proclaimed a day of mourning.
