The judicial investigation will ascertain the causes and possible responsibilities for the sinkhole that this morning, in via Morghen al Vomero, opened and swallowed two cars and caused minor injuries to two people.
The sudden collapse of the road involved a parked car and another in transit with two people inside. The two passengers were extricated from the car and taken to the hospital for evaluation, but their condition is not life-threatening.
The Naples Public Prosecutor's Office has opened an investigation into the incident. The municipal police are conducting initial investigations to determine the cause of the collapse.
Due to the sinkhole, two adjacent buildings were evacuated as a precaution. They are a building in via Solimena, with 8 people evacuated, and a building at number 63 of via Morghen, inhabited by about 60 people.
The affected area has been closed to traffic and bus routes have been diverted. Authorities are working to restore traffic and repair damaged water and sewer lines.
The Municipality of Naples is evaluating how to assist the evacuees. A meeting regarding the incident was convened at the Prefecture, attended by representatives of the Civil Protection Department, the Municipality, law enforcement, the Fire Department, the 118 emergency services, the Red Cross, and the companies Enel Distribuzione, 2iRetega, and Abc.
The situation is under control
"The situation is being closely monitored," reads a statement released by the Prefecture at the end of the meeting. A tree downed by the collapse is also being removed, and the two cars that fell into the sinkhole will be recovered and the underlying water and sewer lines repaired, resulting in the reactivation of the water service. Finally, the road will be resurfaced.
