Another memorable day for Italian tennis, with the Italian team, winners of the Davis Cup in Malaga, having the honor of meeting President Sergio Mattarella at the Quirinale Palace today. The emotion and compliments of the Head of State were the highlight of a highly anticipated meeting, with numerous fans and enthusiasts awaiting the Azzurri outside the Quirinale Palace, giving a warm welcome to the protagonists, including Jannik Sinner and Matteo Berrettini.
The Davis Cup victory last November, which brought the silver salad bowl back to Italy after 47 years, did not go unnoticed. The meeting with President Mattarella was announced immediately after the Italian triumph and was scheduled to bring together all the protagonists. In the meantime, Italian tennis continued to amaze thanks to Jannik Sinner, who achieved victory at the Australian Open, winning the first Slam trophy in Melbourne in singles after a 48-year wait.
During the meeting at the Quirinale, in addition to the Azzurri lined up, including Jannik Sinner, Lorenzo Sonego, Lorenzo Musetti, Matteo Arnaldi and Simone Bolelli with captain Filippo Volandri, Andrea Vavassori and Matteo Berrettini were also present. All the athletes, very elegant and visibly moved, shared the moment with President Mattarella.
Inside the halls of the Quirinale, the Minister for Sport and Youth Andrea Abodi, the President of Coni Malagò and the President of Fitp Angelo Binaghi also joined the celebration. The latter emphasized how this exciting day could become a splendid custom in the coming years. Among those present were also Nicola Pietrangeli, the general secretary Carlo Mornati and a large delegation of members of the Federtennis and padel.
Next up was an emotional Jannik Sinner, who declared: “It's a great honor to be here, not just for myself but for the whole team. We're normal guys who, thanks also to the Captain, managed to do something very beautiful and important for this nation. The important thing, however, wasn't just winning, but understanding each other and feeling free on the court. This Cup has given us so many emotions… This year there are the Olympics: each of us will try to do our best there too. We can't control the future, but let's hope it goes well ,” concluded the Australian Open winner.
