A committee has been formed to promote the UNESCO recognition of the Neapolitan Mastiff, thanks to the initiative of the "Neapolitan Mastiff of the World" association, founded by trainer Ciro Fusco.
The main objective is to make the value of this dog breed known internationally, in order to obtain the prestigious recognition of heritage. UnescoThe project enjoys the support of MP Francesco Emilio Borrelli and writer Maurizio De Giovanni.
The Neapolitan Mastiff, descendant of the Assyro-Babylonian molossers spread in Europe by the Romans, is a symbol of the history and tradition of Campania. During the Bourbon period, it served as a guard dog and later, during the era of brigandage, it was used to counter the Savoy army.
At risk of extinction at the beginning of the 20th century, the breed was rediscovered in the Neapolitan and Avellino countryside after the Second World War, from which it took its current name. The Neapolitan Mastiff is an integral part of the Campania cultural heritage and a true monument to the modern canine world.
The support of the municipal administration of San Sebastiano al Vesuvio and the Campania Region is a significant advantage for the committee's journey towards achieving its goal. The initiative also counts on the support of regional councilor Giovanni Mensorio and the municipal administration of San Sebastiano al Vesuvio.
