The Guardia di Finanza of Varese discovered and seized 12 tons of electronic cigarettes dangerous for the health of consumers coming from China. The products were intended for online sale with an estimated value of over 1,5 million euros.
The investigation began with the seizure of a load of electronic cigarettes from China and sold through a well-known e-commerce portal. Subsequently, the financial police followed the trail of the load, reconstructing the supply chain by analyzing the documentation provided by the shipping companies and carrying out targeted inspections until they located the warehouse where the products were stored.
Laboratory tests revealed numerous irregularities in the devices, such as the presence of amounts of e-liquid well above the permitted limits, high concentrations of nicotine, and contamination with dangerous heavy metals.
The investigations led to the identification and reporting of three Chinese citizens on charges of smuggling aggravated by transnationality and placing dangerous products on the market.
During the operation, a detailed list of all buyers was acquired, approximately 1.500 individuals, with the possibility of an administrative penalty for quantities purchased, ranging from 5.000 to 50.000 euros.
For those who have made purchases exceeding 10 kg, the crime of smuggling is instead configured. The Guardia di Finanza has also announced the possible involvement of such buyers, many of whom are very young.
