Michele Misseri, 69, will be released from Lecce prison next Sunday to return to his home in via Grazia Deledda in Avetrana, in the province of Taranto.
He completed his final sentence for complicity in the suppression of a corpse in the murder of his sixteen-year-old niece, Sarah Scazzi, which occurred at the end of August 2010. Sentenced to eight years in prison, he benefited from a sentence reduction of over 400 days thanks to good behavior in prison and the early release law.
The Court of Cassation confirmed the sentence in February 2017, indicating Michele's wife, Cosima Serrano, and daughter Sabrina Misseri as the perpetrators of the crime, convicted of voluntary homicide in competition and currently serving life sentences.
According to the prosecution, Michele Misseri took care of hiding his niece's body in a well in the countryside. After various versions of the facts, he was convicted despite having denied involvement in the crime.
The mayor of Avetrana, Antonio Iazzi, has asked for respect for the memory of Sarah Scazzi and her family in view of the release of Michele Misseri. He hopes that there will not be excessive media attention as happened after Sarah's disappearance.
"We hope," declared the mayor, who has been in office for two and a half years, "that the same media circus that prevailed in the town after Sarah's passing will no longer exist. " "I don't think so, but this is our hope," he added. "We want Avetrana to be remembered for something else, not for this sad and painful event . "
In an attempt to "avoid the press rush" and "ensure peace for residents," Iazzi explained, "we decided to adopt an ordinance closing Via Deledda to traffic."
