Another day of chaos and disruption on the A1 Milan-Naples motorway due to fog banks that drastically limited visibility for motorists in the Po Valley.
This situation caused a series of accidents, including a massive pile-up between Piacenza and Parma, involving approximately 25 cars and injuring 25 people, two of them seriously.
The stretch in the direction of Bologna remained closed for about six hours while the rescuers worked tirelessly to extract the people involved from the crashed vehicles. The alarm was raised shortly after 8:75 for several accidents between kilometers 85 and 1 of the AXNUMX in the direction of Bologna.
The emergency rescue procedure was immediately activated with dozens of vehicles deployed on the field and coordinated by the Piacenza ASL together with Anpas, the Red Cross and the 118 Emilia Nord operations center based in Parma. The firefighters and the Polstrada agents were also at work.
Of the twenty-five injured, 17 were mild cases, six were medium-serious and two were serious. The latter are two men aged 41 and 49. They were rushed to the Maggiore hospital in Parma and the 49-year-old is in intensive care.
The highway was closed between Piacenza Sud and Fidenza (Parma) until early afternoon. Another accident in the opposite direction, towards Milan, also decreed the closure of that stretch, albeit for a couple of hours.
Six/seven kilometre queues on the motorway
The six-seven kilometre long traffic jams were cleared in fits and starts. The very low visibility due to fog was the determining factor for the accidents, a weather phenomenon typical of this period that, in some cases, can be accentuated by smog. At the beginning of February, similar conditions caused accidents with even worse consequences on the A21 and A22, with a total of three deaths and over 60 injuries.
This morning on the Autobrennero and on the A26 Genova-Gravellona Toce there were accidents due to fog, causing concern and inconvenience for the many motorists stranded on the A1.
Drivers were looking for information to find out the reason for the highway blockage, even showing photos of repeated accidents. The situation was also complicated for those who were stuck near the Fiorenzuola service station, but were not involved in the accidents. People were trying to get information and some even managed to climb over the carriageway.
