Pompeii, night guards of the excavations slept instead of keeping watch: reported

Two employees of the Ministry of Culture working in the control room of the Archaeological Park of Pompeii have been hit by an order prohibiting them from residing in the Municipality of PompeiThe order was issued by the GIP of the Court of Torre Annunziata at the request of the Public Prosecutor's Office.

The two men are seriously suspected of the crimes of aggravated and continued fraud against the State, interruption of a public service and false attestations regarding their presence at the workplace.

The investigation, conducted by the Carabinieri of the Fixed Post at the Pompeii Excavations and coordinated by the Public Prosecutor's Office, was launched following the nocturnal intrusion of an unidentified person into the Archaeological Park.

The investigation revealed that the two suspects, on nearly 40 occasions between May 2022 and August 2023, after clocking in to justify their presence on duty, arbitrarily left their workplace to engage in activities unrelated to public service.

In particular, it was ascertained that the two men, at night, would leave the control room and take refuge in an adjacent room, without any surveillance screens, where they would sit on a camp bed.

They slept on camp beds in rooms distant from the control center.

In this way, the two employees not only avoided their supervisory duties, but also falsely certified their presence on duty.

The precautionary measure of the residence ban was issued to protect the need to prevent the repetition of the crimes and to safeguard public order.

Investigations are still ongoing to ascertain any further responsibilities.
