The mayor of Naples, Gaetano Manfredi, has announced the urban regeneration project in the northern district of Scampia.
The process involves the progressive demolition of the Vele and their replacement with new buildings, which will lead to the creation of an eco-sustainable neighborhood tailored to the housing needs of the population.
“The demolitions will begin at the end of February, but it is a process of progressive building replacement. So it does not mean that at the end of the month the Vele will be demolished in their entirety, but gradually pieces will be removed and new buildings will be built, so that at the end of the process only one Vela will remain, which will not have residential functions, and we will build an eco-sustainable neighborhood, on a human scale to ensure that there is quality housing”.
This intervention aims to counter the infiltration of organized crime in the construction sector and to guarantee greater legality in the management of the territory. The mayor stressed the importance of acting in peripheral areas to counter the action of the Camorra in guaranteeing housing and income illegally.
Urban redevelopment and residential regularization represent a fundamental contribution to promoting legality and preventing crime from taking control of these processes.
Manfredi also highlighted the demand for answers from citizens' committees, who want a concrete commitment to guarantee legality and well-being within communities.
