A fight between two inmates in the common ward of the prison in Avellino it resulted in an attack with a rudimentary knife.
The injured prisoner was rushed to the emergency room with the assistance of the State Police, due to the numerical unavailability of internal personnel.
The Uilpa Penitentiary Police of Avellino reports the lack of personnel that forced the intervention of the State Police.
“A problem that has been reported for years and that still today forces daily mergers of service positions, overloading the prison police with work”, says the union.
Critical issues in all penitentiary institutions in the Avellino area
The union's complaints “they reflect critical issues related to all the penitentiary institutions in the Avellino area, where the available staff is stretched to the limit in a desperate attempt to guarantee minimum levels of security and which appears day by day to be the harbinger of an imminent disaster”.
“An example is the Ariano Irpino prison, which lacks an entire wing in its staffing and which takes in prisoners transferred from other prisons in Italy for order and safety, with consequent difficulty in managing them considering the limited availability of units and the overcrowding of the prison population”.
The appeal to the top
“We invite the leaders to take note of the problems of the penitentiary institutions of the Avellino area and to provide for a congenial resolution as soon as possible, it is urgently needed not only in the interest of restoring the levels of security but above all of the psychophysical well-being of the penitentiary police officers”.
The situation is serious and requires urgent intervention by the competent authorities to ensure the safety of inmates and prison police officers.
