The charred human remains found in the garden of the villa in Altavilla Milicia have been identified as those of Antonella Salamone, the wife of Giovanni Barreca, who confessed to her murder and that of her two sons, Kevin, 16, and Emanuel, 5.
The remains were found under a pile of earth, along with those of some animals. The surveys are entrusted to the RIS of Messina.
Pascale Ballof, a neighbor of the Barreca family, said she found the door of her house forced open after the tragedy. The carabinieri, who intervened the previous night because of complaints coming from the house, had mistaken the meows of a cat in heat for the screams of a person in danger. The woman protested about the damage done to her house during the break-in, receiving the promise of repairs.
Friend of Barreca: “Never knew of violence”
A merchant from Altavilla Milicia, an acquaintance of Giovanni Barreca, described the man as a quiet and religious worker, known in the village for his calm nature. He expressed disbelief in the face of the tragedy and stressed that no one suspected that Barreca could commit such an act. He also criticized people who claim to have witnessed domestic violence without ever reporting it.
The community of Altavilla Milicia is shocked by the tragedy. The reconstruction of the facts and the possible responsibilities of other individuals are the object of investigation. The death of Antonella Salamone and her two children leaves an immense pain and a deep anxiety.
