A 55-year-old Penitentiary Police officer, originally from Serino, took his own life today with a shot fired with his service pistol at the prison in Ariano Irpino.

Mirko Manna, Fp Cgil Nazionale, denounces the dramatic reality of suicides among Penitentiary Police Officers, the category with the highest percentage of suicides among all the State Police Forces.
Manna identifies the causes of this phenomenon in the stress resulting from decades of inconsistent and electorally driven government policies, which do not adequately address the critical issues of the prison system.
Staff shortages, both in the Penitentiary Police and in central function personnel, aggravate the situation and make the daily management of prisons difficult.
