Dutch footballer Quincy Promes has been arrested in Dubai at the request of Dutch authorities. Promes was convicted of drug trafficking and stabbing his cousin.
The arrest was the result of cooperation between the authorities of the United Arab Emirates and the Netherlands, following the Red Notice issued by the Netherlands. This international arrest request is aimed at Promes' extradition.
Footballer Promes was sentenced in absentia last month to six years in prison for cocaine trafficking, and had previously received a year and a half in prison for attacking his cousin.

Promes, who played 50 times for the Dutch national team, had moved from Ajax to Spartak Moscow and was living in Moscow to avoid arrest. However, his trip to the United Arab Emirates led to his capture.
The Netherlands will now seek Promes' extradition under the treaty it signed with the United Arab Emirates in 2021. This agreement provides for the mutual extradition of wanted persons for criminal prosecution or the execution of final sentences.
Promes' arrest in Dubai was made possible thanks to the joint efforts of authorities from both countries. Promes, currently 32, is in custody pending further developments. According to the Dutch prosecutor, no detailed information is being released at this time to avoid compromising the ongoing investigation.
