A thirty-year-old North African prisoner was saved in extremis by the Penitentiary Police in the prison of Benevento.
He had tied himself to the bars of the window with a noose made of sheets, but was rescued before he could commit the extreme act of suicide. He is currently hospitalized for the necessary treatment.
According to the trade unionist Louis Castaldo, regional secretary of Campania CON.SI.PE, it is important to recognize the courage and prompt intervention of the prison staff who prevented another tragedy in Italian prisons.
Castaldo emphasizes the importance of having qualified professionals, such as educators, psychologists and psychiatrists, to effectively support the treatment and recovery work within prisons.
However, despite the humanitarian commitment of the Penitentiary Police staff, there are still significant organizational criticalities that put the treatment and re-education of prisoners at risk.
The regional vice-secretary CON.SI.PE Campania, Thomas De Lia, highlights the need for more human and instrumental resources to adequately address the problems present in the prison system. In addition, an awareness demonstration is planned for March 8 in front of the prison, to urge greater attention to the situation of the penitentiary structure in Benevento.
