The Carabinieri of the station Napoli Capodimonte arrested a 50-year-old man, Salvatore Caso, for attempted theft by sleight of hand, aggravated threats and resisting a public official.
The arrest took place yesterday afternoon in the San Carlo Arena neighborhood, during a service aimed at combating bus thefts. The soldiers, in plain clothes, were checking the 204 line when they noticed Caso trying to steal an elderly man's wallet.
Caught red-handed, the man threatened the Carabinieri that he had a knife in his pocket and attempted to flee. After a brief struggle, he was stopped and searched.
A switchblade was found on him, which was seized. Caso was arrested and is now awaiting trial. The Carabinieri operation represents an important result in the fight against bus thefts, a phenomenon that unfortunately afflicts many Italian cities.
In particular, Naples, with its large influx of tourists, is an easy target for pickpockets. The Carabinieri will continue to patrol the most at-risk areas to ensure the safety of citizens and visitors.
Advice from the Provincial Command of the Carabinieri of Naples:
– Before boarding, make sure all the bags you are carrying are closed.
– Carry bags and purses with the opening facing inward and protect them with one hand on top;
– Don’t keep your wallet and smartphone in your back pocket, but keep them in your front pocket;
– Keep your concentration high and don’t let yourself be distracted by your smartphone or by the conversations of other travellers;
– Avoid getting surrounded by people who seem to know each other.
