The former referee and designator Paul Casarin, current commentator on 'Radio Anch'io Sport' on Radio Rai 1, spoke about the refereeing errors of the last round: “Referees are in a complicated phase, influenced by frequent changes in the rules that cause confusion and inevitably compromise their judgment.”
“They try to make football more spectacular by constantly intervening in the rules to encourage the production of goals, but I strongly doubt that a result of 6-0 is more appreciated than a 2-1. The tension between the technical component and the associative one has always existed, and I do not believe it is related to the current situation”.
“A clear division of responsibilities would be desirable, but referees must be able to exercise their human discernment. VAR should not be used for a frantic hunt for errors, but rather to assess whether there are situations that the referee has not noticed on the pitch.”
“It should only intervene to correct obvious errors, avoiding an obsessive search that involves prolonged checks and verifications for minutes. There are those who argue that VAR will take control and the referee will become only an executor of orders, but this prospect is surprising. A push seen on television, for example, differs significantly from its real impact, which only the referee on the pitch can accurately assess.”
