There are already 29 cyclists who have lost their lives on Italian roads since the beginning of 2024, of which 26 were men and 3 women. 17 of them were over 65 years old.
The Observatory is raising the alarm asaps (Association of supporters and friends of the traffic police) – Sapidata, which highlights a worrying increase in the number of deaths compared to the same period last year, when 10 cyclists died.
The month of January was the most tragic, with 18 victims, a figure that far exceeds the figures of the last six years (10 in 2023, 11 in 2022, 15 in 2021, 11 in 2020, 10 in 2019 and 12 in 2018). In February there were 7 deaths, while in the first ten days of March there are already 4.
Among the most recent cases, three episodes of road piracy: in Castel Volturno (Caserta), a young driver hit and killed a cyclist and then fled with his friends, showing up only a few hours after the accident. In Borgaro Torinese, a 47-year-old was left to die on the road after being hit, while in Susegana (Treviso) a 90-year-old was hit by a bus in a bus lane.
As regards the geographical distribution of deaths, Lombardy is the most affected region with 5 victims, followed by Veneto (4), Tuscany, Lazio and Campania (3), Emilia-Romagna, Sardinia and Friuli Venezia Giulia (2).
Asaps underlines the seriousness of the situation and calls on the authorities to take urgent measures to improve the safety of cyclists on the roads.
