An important step forward for mobility Napoli and for tourism: the connection between the Poggioreale and Capodichino stations of the metro line 1 has in fact been completed.
Article Key Points
Breaking the last diaphragm: This morning the TBM cutter, which excavated underground, broke the last diaphragm between the two tunnels that make up the metro route. The event was attended by Mayor Gaetano Manfredi and Councilor for Infrastructure and Mobility Edoardo Cosenza.
A complex project: The project for the two tunnels (each approximately 1000 meters long and with a diameter of 6,8 meters) was drawn up by Metropolitana di Napoli and Metropolitana Milanese. The construction was entrusted to the Consorzio Integra – Sinergo Spa.
The works: The first tunnel was completed in March 2021. The cutter was then dismantled in Poggioreale and transferred to Capodichino for the excavation of the second tunnel, which began in July 2021.
An interruption and a restart: Work was interrupted by a subsidence in the Poggioreale cemetery in January 2022, when there were still 120 meters of excavation to be done. The suspension lasted until December 2022. With the restart of work, ground consolidation works were carried out to prevent further subsidence.
The next steps
“We hope that by 2026 the metro will be able to reach Capodichino airport,” said Mayor Manfredi. “This work is the result of great institutional collaboration and great work done by qualified companies.”
“A great institutional collaboration between the Metropolitana and the Municipality will allow us to open the connection of the Tribunali and Centro Direzionale stations, which are almost operational, with Capodichino by June 2026”, confirmed Paolo Carbone, president of the Naples Metro.
The completion of the connection between Poggioreale and Capodichino represents a significant step forward for Naples' transport system and for tourism, facilitating access to the airport.
