Last night, during police checks, a young Italian tourist was temporarily arrested for flashing the Hitler salute in a Munich restaurant. Police said the 18-year-old was later released after routine checks and bail. Further investigations into this case are now underway.
The controversy did not stop there, as some Lazio fans, inside the historic Hofbräuhaus brewery, sang chants praising the Duce, complete with Roman salutes. A video published by “Repubblica” immortalized these embarrassing moments, quickly making the rounds of the media. The brewery management stated that it had not been aware of these episodes and specified that it would have intervened if it had been informed.
The Councillor for Sport of Rome Capital, Alessandro Onorato, firmly condemned the behaviour of the fans: “The images of Lazio fans chanting for the Duce and doing Roman salutes are a disgrace. They are mud on the team, on all the fans and on the city of Rome”. He stressed that this situation does not represent the majority of fans and called for an unequivocal condemnation, highlighting the importance of anti-fascism as an essential condition for being Italian.
The case is now the subject of an investigation by the Munich police, who are trying to identify those responsible for these controversial incidents. The episode raises concerns about the attitude of some groups of fans and highlights the need for a clear distancing from fascist positions.
