After more than 14 months of detention, Dani Alves, former captain of the Brazilian national team, has the possibility of being released from prison while awaiting the final sentence for the rape charges against him. The Court of Barcelona has decided to grant this possibility following the appeals presented by the lawyer of the 40-year-old Brazilian.
However, Alves' release will be conditional on the payment of a €1 million bail. The court's decision has sparked mixed reactions, given that both the prosecutor's office and the prosecution had insisted that the former Barcelona and Juventus player remain in pre-trial detention.
Alves was sentenced to four and a half years in prison for the rape of a young woman in the bathroom of the "Sutton" nightclub in Barcelona in December 2022. The announcement of Alves' possible release has sparked public debate regarding the handling of sexual assault allegations and the treatment of public figures involved in such cases.
