- cyber attacks in the world are multiplying, day after day and Italy is not at all alien to this situation. The multiplication of cyber attacks and disastrous data breach has raised concerns among institutions and companies, who are now more aware than ever that the risk is more real than one might think.

The worsening of attacks and the arrival of increasingly sophisticated techniques, both for violation and for SOCIAL ENGINEERING, coupled with the confusion caused by the Generative AIs require immediate intervention by the institutions and, in Italy, something is already moving.

The reason is mainly related to the effects that such attacks, if successful, can cause: as reported in the ExpressVPN article that talks about the costs associated with cyber attacks, we are talking about stellar damages which, in 2023, were around eight trillion dollars, that is, a number with 12 zeros.

The increasing complexity of attacks and the consequences they cause represent a growing threat today, which does not only put at risk the business of companies or the operational continuity of public administrations: at stake are sensitive data of individuals, their Rights to the protection and, obviously, the stability of the country.

The Impact of Data Breaches

I data breach, or data breaches, represent one of the main risks for Italian companies and citizens. The consequences of a cyber attack, in fact, can be long-lasting and cause damages whose severity goes far beyond the costs of compensation or repair. For companies, in fact, Data Breaches entail operating costs, Legal e reputational, not only immediately but also for a long time to come.

This is particularly evident in the healthcare sector, where the highest average loss due to data breaches reaches almost 11 million dollars per year. When local institutions such as local health authorities, insurance companies, banks, or retail chains are targeted, the damage isn't limited to the disruption of operations: end consumers also suffer, their data being forcibly removed and treated as a commodity for exchange or ransom.

Sometimes one is enough make it very small within a system to generate chaos or send an entire community into a tailspin.

This is what happened, for example, with the smart refrigerators which, thanks to the ability to connect to the Internet, became the main point of exchange and sending of spam: in that case, refrigerators and other household appliances were used as “botnets”, that is, as “zombies that carry out commands from whoever controls them remotely.

Trends: Vulnerabilities and Countermeasures

According to projections by industry experts, the Costs associated with cyber attacks should keep growing: could reach 9,5 trillion dollars in 2024 and 10,5 trillion in 2025. This upward trend makes it clear, without a shadow of a doubt, that we can no longer postpone the adoption of defense measures, at national, local and individual levels.

Italian companies and individuals are exposed to a number of vulnerability which continuously attract malicious users and cybercriminals. Among the main threats are theSOCIAL ENGINEERING, Phishing and the vulnerabilities of the outdated software. Furthermore, the lack of awareness and training in cybersecurity allows criminals to carry out more attacks.

To counteract this situation, today, it is necessary to adopt a more rigid, updated and prepared approach to face increasingly complex challenges and risks. This is why it is also necessary to invest in staff training, in order to increase awareness of cyber risks and promote safe online behavior.

The Key Role of the Agency for the Country's Security

In Italy aAgency ad hoc with the aim of designing aNational Cyberspace Defense Architecture.

The Agency's mission is also to promote prudent behaviors at every level, both individual and collective: this means that in addition to dictating operational guidelines, it must report to the Prime Minister with regards to dissemination and awareness-raising activities.

THEincidence of cyber attacks which are carried out to the detriment of citizens and companies must be countered with updated and recent measures and, above all, must be focused on prevention. This is only possible through the creation of a culture of defense and, therefore, through the dissemination of good navigation practices and sharing sensitive data and information online.
