Ercolano, the municipality and the court of Naples together for public utility works

"This agreement represents a significant step toward collaboration between institutions, allowing us to implement concrete projects and, at the same time, offering a second chance to those who have made mistakes in the past."

This was declared by Ciro Buonajuto, mayor of Herculaneum and national vice president of the National Association of Italian Municipalities (ANCI), announcing the signing of a protocol with the Ministry of Justice and the Court of Naples for the performance of community service in Ercolano. This, according to a statement from the Naples Municipality, is a new application of the "probation" program that will allow five people to simultaneously serve their sentences by performing community service in the Ercolano area.

Probation offers defendants and those under investigation for less serious crimes the opportunity to avoid trial and maintain a clean criminal record. In exchange, they must accept a series of commitments, including compensation for damages and community service, obviously unpaid. Probation, Buonajuto explains, "on the one hand, is an opportunity for those who have only made one mistake to rehabilitate themselves, and on the other, it helps reduce criminal litigation."

Activities to be carried out within the Municipality may be implemented in the following areas: cultural heritage enhancement; environmental protection and landscaping; waste sorting, landfill management, and municipal solid waste treatment facilities; public greenery maintenance; protection, promotion, and enhancement of protected areas and natural parks; anti-stray dog ​​interventions; and communication and awareness-raising activities. In any case, the maximum number of people accepted for community service that the Municipality is willing to accept cannot exceed five at a time.
