Police Report: Journalist Intimidation Declines in 2023

The Criminal Analysis Service of the Central Directorate of the police Criminal Investigations presented the report "Acts of Intimidation Against Journalists" in 2023. The report highlights an 11,7% decrease in cases compared to 2022, with 98 incidents versus 111 the previous year.

Features of the episodes:

12 cases (12,2%) attributable to organised crime contexts.
40 cases (40,8%) attributable to political-social contexts.
30 cases (30,6%) occurred via web channels, in line with 2022.
Facebook (13 episodes) and email (8 episodes) are the most used online media.

The most affected regions are Lazio, Lombardy, Campania, Calabria and Sicily with 68 episodes (69,4% of the total).

The most affected cities are Rome (17 episodes), Milan (15 episodes), Reggio Calabria (8 episodes) and Naples (6 episodes).

The victims: 92 media professionals, 21 women (22,8%) and 71 men (77,2%). Eight percent of the reports involved intimidation of newsrooms or crews.

In some cases, no complaints were filed. The decline in the number of intimidations is a positive development. However, organized crime and political and social tensions remain a threat to press freedom. Collaboration between journalists and law enforcement is essential to combat this phenomenon.
