The City of Naples has announced plans to build walkways to provide easy access to the sea along Via Caracciolo. Although the completion timeline is not yet set, Infrastructure Councilor Edoardo Cosenza expressed optimism about the project.
The issue was the focus of lively debate during the City Council meeting, part of a broader discussion on the use of the sea and the actions needed to make Naples' sea accessible and increasingly suitable for swimming. Councilor Cosenza emphasized the importance of making walkways public and free, with no cost to residents.
"The Council is pragmatic and concrete", Cosenza declared, "And we are determined to make this project a reality. We are evaluating various options, including sponsorship, but at the moment we don't have a definitive plan." As for Naples' beaches, the reservation system has been confirmed for summer 2024, deemed essential for safety reasons, especially on private beaches with cliffs where evacuation may be necessary.
"We are working to improve the service", Cosenza assured. Regarding bathing safety, particular attention is being paid to the San Giovanni a Teduccio area, where work was completed last year and work is underway on the sewer system. "The issue of swimmability is extremely complex and requires time.", the Councillor specified, adding that the most recent data from ARPAC indicate an improvement in the situation.
Representatives of various organizations participated in the discussion, including ABC, Marevivo, the Anton Dohrn Zoological Station, and the Italian Navy. Meanwhile, outside the City Council building, committees and associations demonstrated to demand free access to the city's sea.
