With the probable confirmation of Ursula von der Leyen at the presidency of the European Commission, the hypothesis of Mario Draghi as the favourite candidate for the presidency of the European Council.
Supporting this hypothesis is the daily newspaper Politico.eu, according to which, in addition to the former Portuguese Prime Minister Antonio Costa, there would be the former President of the ECB and of the Italian Council Mario Draghi, considered the most effective choice to re-establish the balance between the Commission and the European Council as well as a response to the difficulties that emerged during the mandate of Charles Michel.
According to the newspaper Politico, in fact, "it was the 'Whatever it takes' approach that saved the eurozone. And EU leaders should show the same spirit to face the challenges of the block once again". In recent weeks, the Financial Times also dedicated an analysis to this hypothesis, although there was no real endorsement.
